幕末期、新撰組局長・近藤勇をして「薩摩者と勝負する時には初太刀を外せ」と言わしめたとされるのは、示現流及びその分派（示現流、太刀流、薬丸自顕流など）を指している。これらの薩摩剣術は初太刀での一撃必殺を旨としており、正面から初太刀を受けようとすると、真剣でもへし折られ、もしくは折られなくとも刀ごと押し込まれて斬られる可能性が高く、防御が困難なためである。
実際、幕末期に示現流と戦った武士の中には、自分の刀の峰や鍔を頭に食い込ませて絶命した者がいた事は有名である。
